San Francisco Bay in the U.S. state of California may soon reroute shipping lanes to prevent ship strikes with whales, according to the Associated Press. The plan would reroute the existing shipping lanes slightly - predominately by extending current lanes - and create a whale monitoring network to warn ships of whales within the lanes. The ships could then slow down or avoid the area altogether.

The Nature Conservancy is seeking proposals to research implementation of marine stewardship principles in federal agencies. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to identify how marine stewardship principles can be utilized and leveraged via federal agency mechanisms (e.g. NEPA review, Secretarial Orders, agency rules, legal interpretation, guidance, directives, agency legal opinions, etc.) to advance better and more integrated ocean management. Please refer to the attached document for a more detailed description of the RFP.

The deadline for response is July 31.

The Northeast Ocean Data Portal Working Group today released a new version of the Portal’s interactive map—the Northeast Ocean Data Viewer—and a new set of downloadable geospatial databases on fishing effort, commercial vessel traffic, and other ocean uses. The Northeast Ocean Data Portal  provides data, tools, and information to support ocean planning in the northeastern United States.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) focused on the theme of Ecosystem-based Adaptation. Four panels addressed: ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation; economic valuation of land (EVL); the Bonn Challenges; and coastal climate change solutions.
