Australia's most precious ocean environments will be protected by the world's largest network of marine reserves created by the Gillard Government.

Environment Minister Tony Burke today released the Government's final network of marine reserves which - once proclaimed under national environmental law - will increase the number of marine reserves from 27 to 60, expanding the national network to cover more than a third of Commonwealth waters.

"For generations Australians have understood the need to preserve precious areas on land as national parks. Our oceans contain unique marine life which needs protection too," he said.

Critical Ocean Resources at Risk: New Report Finds Federal Government Falls Short on Ocean Management While States Step Up to Implement National Ocean Policy

June 6, 2012 (Washington, D.C.) – The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative released its 2012 U.S. Ocean Policy Report Card today, praising state and regional efforts to implement the National Ocean Policy that is critical to our national security, coastal economies and the health of our ocean resources. While commending solid steps taken by the Administration to begin implementation, it highlights that overall, implementation has fallen short of expectations and Congress has not shown leadership on the issue.

At the press conference, which took place during Capitol Hill Oceans Week, the Joint Initiative urged the Senate to take action on the Law of the Sea Convention and called for national leadership to ensure that we can effectively manage the ocean resources that sustain our nation.
