Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) invites highly qualified applicants to apply for the Coastal Training Program Coordinator located at Gloucester Point, VA.

The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR or Reserve) is part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-State partnership network of 29 sites that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). Reserves conduct research, environmental and ecological monitoring, education and stewardship activities that improve our understanding and management of coastal resources and support communities dependent on them. Administered by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), College of William and Mary, CBNERR headquarters is located at the VIMS main campus in Gloucester Point with its four reserve components located along the York River system. Through the Coastal Training Program (CTP), NERR sites address critical coastal resource management issues by providing training and skill building opportunities, technical assistance and information products/tools to professional decision-makers whose choices impact coastal resources and communities.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Develops, markets, and facilitates training activities for coastal decision-maker audiences to address priority coastal issues based on needs assessments, market analyses and CBNERR strategic plans.
  • Provides and facilitates technical assistance for decision-maker audiences which may include development of issue-based documents or other forms of communications to support dissemination of scientific findings and recommendations, participation and/or facilitation of focus groups, and customized training on specialized subjects.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with members of the scientific, management, non-profit and environmental education communities to ensure accurate, easily understandable translation and transfer of information and data to varied audiences.
  • Initiates and collaborates in the development of grant proposals, and other funding opportunities, to secure resources for the advancement of reserve goals.
  • Provides programmatic leadership through contributions to action plans, performance reports, chairing program advisory committee and participation in NERR CTP related activities at state, regional and national levels.
  • Develops administers and analyzes periodic audience needs assessments and program evaluations and apply the results to program planning and improvement.
  • Develops CBNERR related science and education communications via press releases, websites, social media and other channels.
