The role of the Lead At-Sea Fisheries Technician/Trainer requires both administrative project management skills coupled with technical, scientific sampling, analysis and training skills. The Lead At-Sea Fisheries Technician/Trainer must possess a minimum of 2 to 5 years’ experience overseeing marine scientific studies and have a solid understanding of the commercial fishery in the Maritimes region. The chosen candidate will lead and supervise the field technicians in vessel familiarization, safety procedures, and all capacities of the scientific data collection and analysis for the proposed programs. The roles and responsibilities of the Lead At-Sea Fisheries Technician/Trainer are outlined below:
- Provide technical leadership within a team environment;
- Participate in At-sea bycatch monitoring onboard lobster vessels;
- Communicate and/or confirm deployment locations and times with vessel Captains;
- Collect and record accurate bycatch data as per Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO) requirements including: species identification, measurements of finfish and crustaceans, fishing coordinates, trap depth, gear types, photograph unfamiliar species etc.;
- Collect at-sea data on lobsters including identification of male and female lobsters, carapace (body) lengths, shell hardness, and visual observations for injuries using standardized sampling protocols;
- Provide classroom and at-sea training for all at-sea technicians;
- At-sea familiarization and best practices for working on fishing vessels and docks, vessel safety and etiquette for at-sea technicians;
- Data collection, note taking (completeness, accuracy and precision), and recording techniques;
- Species Tagging (lobster and cod)
- Fishing gear type identification;
- Species identification and observational data;
- Biological sample collection methods, handling procedures, and storage protocols;
- Proper tagging procedures and techniques (lobster, Atlantic Cod);
- Marine mammal identification (post MARS training)
- Develop orientation and visual training materials/documentation for at-sea technicians with detailed instructions for all field procedures;
- Design data collection and reporting forms/templates;
- Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required;
- Carry out post trip debriefing with at-sea technicians (verify species identification and data collected);
- Maintain, inspect and calibrate all field and office scientific data equipment;
- Oversee data Quality Assurance and Quality Control
- Data verification, analysis and tracking (tagging program);
- Ensure proper measurements are taken (length, weight);
Qualifications & Requirements:
A range of work experience and education will be considered however those candidates with at-sea experience will be considered above other candidates.
- Experience within the fishery sector or with biological data collection that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic, reading, writing, and data collection to perform routine or repetitive tasks.
- Must possess valid driver’s license AND own means of transportation.
- Must possess own cellular phone.
- Intermediate MS Office skills (Word and Excel).
- Familiarity of handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) units and associated functions;
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and have strong organizational skills
- Adhere to all health and safety requirements and protocols.
- Marine Emergency Duties (MED A1) certificate is considered an asset.
