Location: San Diego, CA Hours: Full time (with some nights and weekends) Duration: 2-year fellowship Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Position Overview This position will support the Blue Prosperity Coalition, a major new initiative of the Waitt Foundation, Waitt Institute and other partners with a focus on ocean conservation. The Coalition works with Government partners to achieve ocean protection and sustainable blue growth through technical assistance in marine spatial planning. The Waitt Institute is seeking a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual to support media and communications of the Waitt Institute and associated projects. The fellowship provides an opportunity to gain knowledge about ocean conservation and develop a broad communications skill set, and work with a diverse team in a small, fast-paced, and variable work environment. Position may include travel. Position will report to Communications Manager.

Responsibilities • Support Communications Manager in the development and implementation of communication and outreach strategies and campaigns • Maintain social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) through content creation and discovery • Design and edit program materials such as flyers, posters, fact sheets, teaching materials, etc. • Assist in content management including file organization and video editing • Draft and edit press releases • Copy edit reports and other materials • Update the Institute website • Other tasks to be devised based on time, expertise and Waitt Institute priorities

Qualifications Required • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, policy, or marine science • Firm grasp of effective use of social media platforms • Experience using social media in a professional setting • Experience using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office • Excellent writing and editing skills • Experience in public relations and/or marketing • Flexibility to respond to changing assignments • Excellent time and project management • Knowledge about science and policy pertaining to ocean conservation

Preferred • 2-3 years of relevant work experience • Experience with paid social media advertising campaigns • Demonstrated record of non-technical publication
