Application Deadline:

Description:

The NMA is an Ocean Conservation Charity with the vision of a world supporting a healthy Ocean to sustain all life.  We have been connecting people with the Ocean for over 20 years, encouraging everyone to Think Ocean!  Our aquarium in Plymouth includes three large mixed displays of 500,000L, 650,000L and 2,500,000L. One is themed on our local marine life and is the largest native exhibit in the UK.

We have been awarded funding from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund for a project proving the concept of a commercial scallop hatchery for the waters around Plymouth. The NMA has already completed a feasibility study and has a pre-existing hatchery that will be repurposed to Pectin maximus spat production.

As a result we are looking to recruit someone with experience of bivalve culture to join our Husbandry department for 12 months and to lead the day to day operation of the scallop hatchery with the goal of successful spat production.  Perhaps you have a degree in aquaculture with some experience and want an opportunity for project work within a supportive team.

You will be responsible for the routine cleaning and maintenance of scallop culture systems and for developing protocols for the efficient culture of microalgae feed for all life stages of scallop development.

The role is full time (37.5 hours a week) and will be based at the NMA in Plymouth.   More information on the role can be found on our website: national-aquarium.co.uk simply follow the link ‘jobs’ at the bottom of the home page.
