Job Title:
Data Engineer / Software developer
Job Location:
Bremerhaven, Germany
Full-Time, 2 years

Saturday, August 31, 2019
The AWI’s Ocean Acoustics Group seeks to further our understanding of the marine acoustic environment and its interaction with anthropogenic sound emissions therein. In this context the AWI will support the IQOE efforts by establishing an IQOE data portal through which IQOE-relevant passive acoustic data and novel data products can directly be accessed.

To realize these developments, the AWI seeks a Data Engineer / Software developer to develop and maintain a designated IQOE data portal for globally collected passive acoustic data.

Work context (DATA HUB EuU HGF)

To develop a common, seminal research data infrastructures for the Research Field Earth and Environment of the Helmholtz Association, we seek to develop cross-disciplinary data management and tools addressing the common FAIR goals (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable). A major component in our effort to build an integrated earth knowledgebase, is to merge the repositories and data infrastructures of marine, terrestrial and atmospheric research centres to become an open, networked information infrastructure.

Background and Tasks
The project resources include access to the AWI’s computing infrastructure and funding for dedicated additional infrastructure.

You will work in close collaboration with the AWI’s computing center and under the supervision of the concurrently employed data curator, who will be in charge of the national and international coordination of the data portal.

You will work with AWI and international scientists to develop data products that are of direct relevance to stakeholders in underwater acoustics.

Project results, such as databases, infrastructure, white and peer-reviewed papers, support of political and regulatory bodies, as well as media outreach will contribute to the conservation and management of aquatic fauna throughout the global ocean, and will advance our understanding of the ecological processes that influence distribution and abundance of marine life.

Specific objectives

  • Work with the Data Curator to implement the technical aspects for the essential data curation process
  • Implement software to deposit and retrieve data related to ambient sound and biological effects
  • Design a system that can be maintained after the first two years and will be an ongoing legacy of the project
