The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) is currently recruiting an Applications Developer within the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI. As a part of the Ecosystem Sciences Division, Applications Developer works with a small team of database management professionals to provide advanced programming and analytical support for marine ecosystem science. Our ideal candidate would have a passion for coding and working with databases, enjoy automating data management processes, and have a keen interest in ocean resource management. Strong Python and SQL skills are desired along with experience with web app development and cloud computing.
DUTIES: Develops, tests, implements, documents, and supports applications, computer procedures, and scripts to ensure the integrity, accessibility, timeliness, usability, and distribution of the project’s data holdings. Develops automated tools and database management applications for the manipulation, integration, and dissemination of data, in both raw and summarized form. Coordinates with all project staff in the collection, capture, processing, documentation, archiving, and maintenance of scientific data, data products and reports. Provides advanced computer systems and database support to researchers and staff before, during, and after research missions. Gathers requirements for application development projects and translates project and data requirements into system designs and functional specifications. This is a sea-going position, supporting the ingestion of data from the field during research cruises that survey the community and oceanography of coral reef ecosystems across the tropical Pacific. Position may entail approx. 1 month of time at sea/year..
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer, Physical, or Biological Science.
EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of professional level work experience which includes a primary focus of programming utilizing state of the art languages, scripts and editors and in the design, development and support of relational database applications with client/server databases, including enterprise-wide database management systems, and web applications and graphical user interfaces for relational databases. Some experience in requirements gathering for application development. Operational experience in the primary data management functional areas of data collection, data capture, data processing, data maintenance, data archival, and data dissemination. Operational experience with metadata procedures, data integration, data manipulation, data parsing, data auditing, and managing large scientific datasets including geographic and time series data.
