The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS) is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal State of Brandenburg. The IASS conducts research with the goal of understanding, advancing, and guiding processes of societal change towards sustainable development. In order to develop a common understanding of sustainability challenges and generate potential solutions the IASS collaborates with diverse actors from science, policymaking and public administration as well as business and civil society. The successful applicant will contribute to the project “Regional and global ocean governance for emerging ocean-based NETs”, working closely with the project lead Dr. Barbara Neumann of the IASS’ Ocean Governance Research Group under the guidance of research group lead Sebastian Unger and scientific director Prof. Dr. Patrizia Nanz. The project is part of the EU Horizon 2020-funded project Ocean-based Negative Emission Technologies - analyzing the feasibility, risks, and cobenefits of ocean-based negative emission technologies for stabilizing the climate (OceanNETs) which is coordinated by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and was kicked-off in July 2020. OceanNETs breaks new ground by bringing together recognized NETs experts from economic, political, legal, social, and natural sciences and establishing a close dialogue with stakeholders in a single integrated project. The IASS together with the University of Hamburg is responsible for work package two (WP2) of the OceanNETs project which will look into the governance, policy and international legal dimensions of ocean-based NETs.
