The principal associate responsibilities include managing the fellowship application process, selection review, grant award and reporting; handling logistics for the program's annual meeting and other events; working with fellows and alumni to develop and organize selected annual meeting sessions; managing program and external funder budgets; drafting written materials for program activities; and overseeing the program's workflow for the environmental research and science unit's coordinator and administrative assistant.

The position, based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office, reports to the project director. This position is contingent upon board approval in September 2020.


  • Oversee day to day operations of the Pew Fellows Program, including coordination of certain staff activities within the team and with other departments such as legal, finance and grants management.
  • Serve as project lead on the yearly marine fellowship nomination, application, review, and selection processes.
  • Develop and oversee fellowship grants, including managing agreements, reviews, approvals and awards, monitoring of grant payments, and facilitating the fellowship annual reporting process.
  • Lead program use of the foundation connect grants system and liaise with internal finance, legal, grants, contracts, and IT staff.
  • Support the project director in Pew program renewals and related internal reporting.
  • Research issues in marine conservation for development of Pew Marine Fellows (PMF) annual meeting sessions, fundraising initiatives, and PMF working groups.
  • Organize selected annual meeting, conference or training sessions, symposia at scientific meetings, and PMF working groups.
  • Manage production tasks for the PMF annual meeting, including the web-based registration process and reports, meeting logistics, travel and communication with attendees. Conduct meeting preproduction site visits as needed.
  • Manage program budgets and coordinate with finance for tracking and reporting.
  • Develop written materials for program as needed, including funder reports and internal documents.
  • Contribute as needed to other activities.


  • Bachelor's degree is required, advanced degree in biological or environmental sciences or related field preferred.
  • At least six years of applicable experience in environmental or marine conservation issues, including experience with meeting planning, project coordination, grants management and administration. Experience with grant making programs and program management is preferred.
  • Proven track record of thinking strategically and creatively, adjusting to changing circumstances, thinking in both short and long-term, remaining attentive to details.
  • Ability to work with large databases and document preparation programs, such as Salesforce, Foundation Connect, FileMaker, Cvent, Adobe Pro and Publisher.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships among individuals and organizations with a range of interests and perspectives. Experience with international programs preferred.
  • Ability to write clearly, including development of written materials, proposals and reports for Pew staff, external funders and the Pew Fellows community.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization and employing strategic planning skills. Able to proactively develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy, while working in a cooperative spirit in a multi-disciplinary team.


This position requires occasional domestic and international travel.
