We are seeking a person to become the Assateague COASTKEEPER, a public advocate for the coastal watershed of Worcester County, who identifies him, her, their self with the Waterkeeper mark and who serves as the primary spokesperson for our coastal waterbodies.

This is not a traditional work environment. One morning for example might be spent navigating waterways to respond to a pollution complaint, then attending a meeting with legislators that afternoon, all with media interviews in between. It’s hard work, but exciting, and very rewarding. Do you have what it takes to be the Assateague COASTKEEPER?

As the licensed Waterkeeper, the Assateague Coastkeeper must have/develop a diverse grassroots constituency committed to protecting clean water and promoting swimmable, drinkable, and fishable waters for all.  The Assateague Coastkeeper must adhere to ACT’s Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) plan for diversifying our organization and our grassroots representation.

Among the Waterkeeper Alliance Quality Standards our Assateague Coastkeeper must adhere to, are the following:

  • Use best efforts to maintain representational standing or relevant measures to have the legal capacity to enforce environmental laws where possible.
  • Identify and respond to citizen complaints.
  • Advocate and enforce compliance with environmental laws, including the use of
  • litigation and administrative challenges against polluters in appropriate circumstances, in consultation with legal counsel.
  • Regular attendance at Waterkeeper Alliance biennial conferences, biennial Regional Summits, and the Annual meeting (in-person and virtual)
  • Regular attendance at Waterkeepers Chesapeake annual meetings and monthly conference calls.

The Assateague Coastkeeper:

  • Reports to the Executive Director.
  • Acts as primary spokesperson for the waterbody and is the primary Communicator to public/local officials.
  • Works with Executive Director and Board to help achieve individual, corporate, foundation, and event fundraising goals.
  • Must be able to drive a pick-up truck with a boat trailer and be capable of operating a 17’ center console boat with an outboard motor. If you are required to have a Maryland Boating Safety Course certification, ACT will help you obtain it.
  • Responsible for maintenance of equipment and watercraft, however boat motor is serviced locally.
  • Patrols waterbody and updates/identifies problem areas, and advises Executive Director.
  • Responds to pollution reports, investigates and refers possible violations to the proper county, state or federal authority.
  • Prepares and leads educational presentations within the community.
  • Oversees water quality monitoring program; tracks health of our coastal waterways
  • Serves as the liaison between Assateague Coastal Trust and Waterkeeper Alliance, as well as other local, state, and national organizations.
  • Ensures Quality Standards to maintain Waterkeeper license are being met, if not exceeded. 

Salary:  $50,000/year.   Health benefits: quarterly stipend.     Flexible vacation/leave/work policies.
