About the Job
Minnesota Sea Grant (MNSG) seeks a full-time Research Program Coordinator (RC) to develop, oversee, and manage MNSG’s research and graduate fellowship programs and to develop their own research program in areas relevant to the mission of MNSG. The RC, as a member of MNSG’s leadership team, will help to develop and prioritize MNSG-funded research themes and topics.The RC is responsible for: identifying recipients and distributing MNSG requests for proposals; coordinating the submission process using MNSG’s eSeaGrant system; securing technical, scientific, and programmatic reviews; participating in selection of successful proposals; and all aspects of associated reporting. The RC may also lead special projects that support MNSG’s mission. The RC is responsible for the development, coordination, recruitment of highly qualified candidates, management, and applicant/candidate support of MNSG’s fellowship program. The RC is expected to eventually support 25% of their salary from externally funded research projects in areas that support MNSG’s mission.

MNSG research program coordinator (65%)
- Track research needs and create and execute MNSG's biennial request for research proposals (RFP) that responds to the research needs of MNSG stakeholders.
- Execute all aspects of the MNSG RFP process including working with research scientists (review panels) to review and evaluate research proposals and submitting proposals identified by MNSG as successful for review by the National Sea Grant Office.
- Develop an extramurally funded research program on research topics that support MNSG’s mission, possibly in collaboration with MNSG extension educators; 25% of salary should eventually be supported by extramural research funding. Qualified candidates may have opportunities to be associated with an appropriate graduate program for student mentoring.
MNSG research fellowships program coordinator (30%)
- Work with the MNSG communications manager to publicize MNSG research fellowship opportunities.
- Recruit and identify highly qualified candidates.
- Organize and present webinars and presentations for potential candidates.
- Provide guidance to fellowship applicants to ensure submission of successful dossiers to relevant research, government and policy organizations.
Other duties (5%)
- Assist MNSG staff in preparing required environmental assessment forms and data management plans.
- Assist MNSG staff in identifying and responding to RFPs.
- Assist applicants with RFPs from the National Sea Grant Office.
- Assist the MNSG leadership team with strategic planning and budgeting.
Minimum requirements and qualifications
- Ph.D. in research on freshwater aquatic sciences, environmental science, or related water-science field.
- Proven research accomplishments in aquatic, natural resource, or environmental science.
- At least 2 years of experience managing research projects.
- Record of peer-reviewed research-based publications.
- Evidence of success in securing extramural research grant funding.
- Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills and experience communicating research findings and information to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Record of successful and efficient organizational and research project management; including fiscal management of research programs.
- Experience in reviewing research grants.
- Experience working with graduate students on their scientific research.
- Four or more years of experience managing research projects.
- Experience with research program planning and administration, including ability to successfully work with senior administrators and research scientists.
- Experience with successful research collaboration across multiple federal and state agencies.
- Experience developing research networks and contacts in the Great Lakes region.
- Scientific leadership experience.
- Experience and/or familiarity with relational databases and database management.
Salary for this job family level (9742R6) starts at $50,552 and will be commensurate with experience.
