A Research Assistant Professorship position is available for a marine ecologist to lead scientific research on coral reefs and coral reef restoration in support of management and conservation in Hawaiʻi.


We seek a senior research ecologist, in the position of Research Assistant Professor (RAP), to combine multiple archival and incoming data sources, such as field and geospatial data, to research and improve knowledge on all aspects of reef ecology on Hawaiʻi Island.  Particular emphasis will be placed on studies supporting the protection and restoration of reef habitats, reef fish communities, resource source and extraction, and coral condition.  Strong connectivity to shore-based impacts on reefs, such as pollution and sedimentation, will also be emphasized.

This position requires strong ecological, statistical, and spatial analysis skills.  Responsibilities include a dynamic combination of ecological analysis, workflow application, reef fieldwork, peer-reviewed journal generation, proposal generation, and engagement with management professionals.


The position will be based in the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS), a research unit of Arizona State University based in the Hawaiian Islands.  The position will be administered from the ASU GDCS facility in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, but daily operations and living will be centered on the South Kona District located on the southwest side of the island.  ASU maintains a South Kona facility as shown on the map.  Additional field activities will reach across other districts of Hawaiʻi Island.


Key program collaborators include the Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources, University of Hawaiʻi, The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi, and NOAA, as well as ASU postdoctoral researchers, technicians, and students. 


The position will be funded for an initial year and will report to GDCS Director, Dr. Greg Asner.  During the first year, the RAP will lead additional proposals for future funding.  The RAP may serve as the Principal Investigator and co-Investigator on proposals.


A Ph.D. in marine ecology is required along with at least two years of post-graduate research and publishing experience.
