A conservation practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in protected area management, strategic planning & project implementation in Africa, Asia, the Pacific & Indian Ocean regions. Extensive field based experience in all aspects of marine protected area (MPA) design, science, monitoring & evaluation, capacity building, outreach, communications and management. Experience at a range of scales; from working with large NGOs & National level Government departments, through to on-site program implementation with small-scale community groups & district government offices. Key interests are: holistic conservation management methods; training & capacity building; management effectiveness evaluation analysis tools; conservation measures; the convergence of environment and development agenda’s; utilizing market-based innovative revenue-generating mechanisms for long-term sustainability; & taking initiatives from paper to practice. Developed & managed the first financially self-sustaining Marine Protected Area in Africa (the award winning Chumbe Island). Have a distinction-level MPhil in Environment & Development from the University of Cambridge UK.
